Into the City: Boston Ma

Monday evening we landed at about 6ish. It was such an incredibly nice evening. I was 30 miles shy of Boston and decided, meh, I am hungry and there is still enough light to capture a few nice shots. I made my way to the city. It would end up taking me 3 hrs before I found something to eat. Untitled_Panorama1

Boston Mass: A Few Photographs

MG_4923.jpg

Starbucks. The place I am currently sitting in to write both this blog post and an article about Travel Photography. I found that the previous place I was sitting, a not to be mentioned location, was just not cutting it for me. It was void of any creativity, not that Starbucks sells creativity, but the ambiance, music, and location are much more suitable to write and edit a few images I just shot on my way over. Cities move fast. People move fast. Cars, bikes, people walking and running keep the city at a faster pace. Not to long ago I over heard a woman telling her daughter that Boston is such a fast city. All she could do was verbalize it over the phone. It is not easy to just say, "Boston is a very fast city," when it really isn't as fast as other cities in the world; such as New York City. Boston moves at its own pace. In fact, as I was on my way over, there was a steady stand still in traffic. The car horns were obnoxious. People were punching the middle of their steering wheels expecting the cars in front of them would magically disappear. The faster I walked, the closer Starbucks became. The closer I would be to sitting inside and hammering out some words into a blog and putting some photos up. I needed to get these thoughts out, as they acted as an opener, a creative thought to get me in the mood to finish my Travel Photography piece. Thank you for your attention... Street Photography: Boston Massachusetts

dyptic3-2.jpg

Last week I had a chance to step out of the studio and shoot some street photography. I turned my lens on to a few streets and areas in Boston. What I discovered was that I was seeing patterns of people, light, and shadows. I was able to produce a small body of work that examines the relationships to these subject matters within public spaces. I saw compositions that had elements that created relationships and present the observer with a dynamic view of these conjoining elements that allow for the relationships to exist. At the very least I was photographing what was appealing to me, objects, people, arrangements, and light that resonated with the time of day and the subject matters I am interested in photographing. There are 12 diptychs below. I think and find that it is incredibly rare that such a group can be found in such a short span of time. A mere 3 hours and I was able to find 24 images that coincide with one another a dynamic level. None-the-less I am pleased with what I was able to find. [gallery link="file" columns="4"]

Boston Mass: Some Photos

On Monday of this week, (June 11th) I was in Boston. I will be there tomorrow Wednesday, June 13th. Monday was for pleasure and Wednesday is for portraits, a tour of the State House, and dinner. On Monday I made some photos, like I typically do when I travel to the city. I hate when you're in a place that you're familiar with and it just so happens to be a place where millions of tourists visit and you're seen with your camera. Photographers with cameras aren't always tourists. Sometimes they are though. But as for me, I am a wandering photographer with specific subject matters. People sleeping on a bench, now that is a photo I like to see. Old toilets left under a wall with graffiti and some car parts, another composition that engages me. Wednesday will be a good afternoon in Boston, like every other day I am in the city. [gallery link="file" columns="4"]

Boston Massachusetts

I frequent travel to Boston as much as I can. There is this photogenic quality about Boston that I can not escape. It began before I had attended the Art Institute of Boston in 2009, but  it is a feeling that I can not escape. It is like a visual sensory over load when I walk around the city. The first attractive quality that I am captivated by is light. The sun light, reflected light, refracted light, bounced light from buildings reflecting off other buildings, cars, signs etc. You name it, if it is illuminating the urban landscape, the skyline, or the street that I am walking on, I am captivated and compelled to photograph it. Of course, Boston does have other cultural and luxurious aspects that can be associated with photography, or at the very least aspects that still happen to fall in front of my lens. I am an avid, well more like HUGE fan of dinning in Boston's North End. Out of the 70 something restaurants in the quaint historic district of the city, I have knocked off a handful. Beneventos is a favorite. I have frequented this place over the last two years. Tell them I sent you! They wont know who the hell you are talking about, but I am sure they will appreciate it. Right around the corner is Mike's Pastry. You havent had a Cannoli until you have had one from Mike's. Even if you are in a stage 4 food coma from Beneventos or one of the other amazing places to dine at, you NEED to make a point to indulge in a cannoli. Of course, they have a line that typically reaches the door, other types of pastries, ( I dont waste my time or money on them, No offense Mike. I know what I like! ) but who wants that when their cannoli's are famous. Right?

Boston is a town that I escape to. I can get lost in the city with my camera and never be lost. There are a lot of great places to see. I have gone out there twice in the last month with my girlfriend and both trips I saw things, through the lens, that I have never seen before. I made images I have never made in the city before. I am going to share a few from both visits, but not all from the last visit, as I am using a few of them to write about black and white photography for another photography blog. Below are some photos from the last two times in the city. As someone who frequent goes to the city for both business and pleasure, I will be sharing stories often.
